"In Verness" was a Commended entry in the Adult Poetry section of the 2015 Neil Gunn Writing Competition. It was written by A.M. Lyall who lives in Inverness.

This year entrants had a choice of three themes from which to choose, with each based on a Neil Gunn quote. In the adult poetry and short story categories, the choice of themes was:

1. "For love is the creator and cruelty is that which destroys" (from The Green Isle of the Great Deep)
2. "The secret loveliness and laughter in things" (from The Serpent)
3. "The extra magic of distance" (from Butcher's Broom)

The Neil Gunn Writing Competition is organised by library staff from High Life Highland in partnership with the Neil Gunn Trust. It was first established in 1988.
