Air Mail Ceremony, Inverness, 1934

This is a photograph of the ceremony to mark the inaugural flight of Britain's first Air Mail service at normal postal rates. The location is the Longman Municipal Aerodrome on the outskirts of Inverness.

Provost Mackenzie and Post Office Surveyor Mr R J R Measham are seen shaking hands. Also, from left to right, Mr Smith Lang (Inverness Town Clerk), General Sir Frederick Williamson, Mr A J Campbell (Head Postmaster), Captain Ernest Edmund "Ted" Fresson (founder and managing director of Highland Airways) and Dr Alexander.

Behind them is the DH Dragon, G-ACCE, that Fresson later flew up to Kirkwall with around 2000 letters.
