Mr Charles Waterston, manager of the Caledonian Bank, Inverness

Mr Charles Waterston, manager of the Caledonian Banking Company. Founded in Inverness in 1838, this bank operated branches from the Moray Firth to Caithness - 20 of them by 1845. Its head office was built in Inverness High Street in 1847.

The notes produced by the bank were unique as they included Gaelic inscriptions. The bank was finally absorbed by the Bank of Scotland in 1907.

Charles Waterston was the father of Jane Waterston, a missionary in the Free Church of Scotland who became the first practising female doctor in South Africa.
