Monarch of the Glen

A photograph of the famous 'Monarch of the Glen' painting by Sir Edwin Henry Landseer. Landseer first went to the Highlands in 1824 to visit Sir Walter Scott. His love of the area inspired many of his paintings, including this one.

The title 'Monarch' is given to a stag with 16 points on his antlers (a point is defined as a projection of at least an inch from base to tip). A stag with 14 points is an 'Imperial' stag and one with 12 points is a 'Royal' stag. The stag in the painting has 12 points on his antlers and is, therefore, a Royal stag
