The Lovat Scouts return from South Africa, 1901-02

When the South African War broke out in 1899, Lord Lovat offered to raise a force of scouts, drawn from stalkers, ghillies and shepherds of the sporting estates of the Highlands. In January 1900 two companies were mustered for military training at Beaufort Castle, and sailed for South Africa in April. They were enlisted for a year's war service, and so a 2nd Contingent and later a 3rd followed them in 1901. On return to Inverness each Contingent of the Lovat Scouts was given a warm reception by the Provost and Magistrates, and luncheon in the Town Hall.
