William Stroudley, on Highland Railway engine no. 21

William Stroudley on Highland Railway engine no. 21. Built in 1863, the engine has a snowplough attached to the front of it.

William Stroudley introduced three different types of snowplough to the Highland Railway, to cope with varying depths of snow. The one seen here was designed to cope with ten foot snow drifts, and was the largest of the three.

Snow blocks on the line have decreased since the 1900s owing to a combination of experience in dealing with severe conditions and milder highland winters
