William Macbean was born in Inverness in 1818. He joined the 93rd Regiment (later the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders - Princess Louise's) as a private and attained the rank of Major-General in 1873. He was awarded the Victoria Cross for his role in the storming of the Begum Bagh at Lucknow, during the Indian Mutiny in 1858, when he killed eleven of the enemy. He died in London in 1878
