Volunteer parade, Farraline Park c.1870. The Volunteers were raised from 1859 to counter the threat of war from Napoleon III's France, and later Bismarck's Germany. In the background is Bell's Institution, a school built in 1841 at the bequest of Dr Andrew Bell of Westminster. This building became a courthouse in 1937 and in 1980 the public library.
