Pipers of the old volunteer band rehearsing. The volunteers had been raised by the Scotch Militia Act of 1802 as the Inverness, Banff, Elgin and Nairn Militia under the command of Sir James Grant of Grant. Men were selected by ballot and served for 3 years.They were liable to be called up as reservists at any time and were also required to support local magistrates
