Volunteer parade, Farraline Park c.1900.

Since 1881 the Volunteers had been linked to their local regular regiments as Volunteer Battalions (4th; 5th; etc.). They could volunteer to serve overseas; and many fought in South Africa from 1900-1902. In the background is Bell's Institution, a school built in 1841 at the bequest of Dr Andrew Bell of Westminster. This building became a courthouse in 1937 and in 1980 the public library
