Dr Alexander MacBain was born in Glenfeshie, Badenoch on 22 July 1855. In 1876 he entered King's College, Aberdeen where he studied philosophy. After graduating he was appointed Rector of Raining's School, Inverness where he remained until 1894. His publications include 'Celtic Mythology and Religion' (1885); 'Personal Names and Surnames of Inverness' (1895) and 'Etymological Dictionary of the Gaelic Language' (1896)
