Presentation to General Sir Hector MacDonald, 1897

Born in the Black Isle in 1853, the son of a crofter, Hector MacDonald began his military career as a private in the 92nd Gordon Highlanders and, through distinguished service in Afghanistan, Sudan and India, rose to the rank of Major-General with the Highland Brigade in 1900. He was knighted in 1901 but after damaging press reports he committed suicide in a Paris hotel in 1903
