Opening of Longman golf course, Inverness, 1895. Golf was played almost exclusively by Scots until the second half of the 19th century, and its numbers were few. It exapanded quickly, particularly after 1880, and on 13 November, 1883, the Inverness Golf Club was formed, electing Lord Lovat as its first president. Over the next few years there were golf clubs built at Longman and Culcabock. Throughout the country more and more Scots were playing and it became a favourite sport for women too
