Main Suspension Bridge and Greig Street Bridge, Inverness

Main Suspension Bridge and Greig Street Bridge, spanning the River Ness.

The old Ness Suspension Bridge, seen at the front of the photograph, opened in 1855 and had a span of 225 feet. At the east end of the bridge, on the right of the photograph, a battlemented archway was built, providing a picturesque entrance to the town. At the west end, two much lower towers were erected.

The Greig Street Bridge, in the background of the photograph, was built in 1882, close to the site where the original timber Ness bridge had stood, before it was washed away in 1620
