This is a statue of Lady Macbeth, from the Gower Memorial in Stratford on Avon. The monument consists of statues of Prince Hal, Hamlet, Lady Macbeth and Falstaff surrounding a seated figure of Shakespeare and was presented to the town by Lord Ronald Sutherland Leveson Gower. The monument was made in 1888 and was moved in 1933 with the building of the Royal Shakespeare Theatre.

Gower (1845 - 1916) was the son of the second Duke of Sutherland. He was Member of Parliament for Sutherland from 1867 to 1874

Behind the statue is a quotation from 'Macbeth': 'Life's but a walking shadow, a poor player That struts and frets his hour upon the stage And then is heard no more'
