The photograph shows a family sitting on the banks of the River Ness looking towards a suspension bridge. The bridge dates from 1853, and connects the Ness Islands to the town of Inverness. It replaced an older bridge which was washed away in the great flood of 1849.

The Ness Islands are an attractive recreation ground for the people of Inverness, separated from the town by a narrow branch of the River Ness. Prior to the construction of the first bridges which connected The Islands to the town, the beauty spot was only accessible by boat
