"Spey Bridge" by Mairi Hedderwick

A drawing of the Spey Bridge near Newtonmore.

The bridge was built in the 1920s to carry the A9 road across the River Spey. It was one of eight bridges designed by Sir Owen Williams and Maxwell Ayrton. The bridge, which is built out of mass concrete, consists of three spans. Today it carries the B9150 as the A9 has been diverted.

This work is from a collection of drawings and sketches by the popular writer and illustrator, Mairi Hedderwick. They all have some connection to the village of Newtonmore and many of them also represent the game of shinty. Mairi Hedderwick is best known as the author and illustrator of the much loved Katie Morag series of children's books.
