untitled shinty drawing #10 by Mairi Hedderwick

This is one of a series of sketches concerning the game of shinty. It is untitled and shows a sign advertising a beer called Stag Ale. It is not known if Hay's Ale House actually existed or is fictitious.

Stag Scottish Ale was originally produced by the Tomintoul Brewery. The company, which began brewing in November 1993 in an 18th century water mill near Tomintoul, was taken over by the Aviemore Brewery in 2000. This in turn was taken over by the Cairngorm Brewery Company in late 2001.

This work is from a collection of drawings and sketches by the popular writer and illustrator, Mairi Hedderwick. They all have some connection to the village of Newtonmore and many of them also represent the game of shinty. Mairi Hedderwick is best known as the author and illustrator of the much loved Katie Morag series of children's books.
