Interior of Lochgorm Works showing machine shop

This picture shows the interior of Lochgorm Works in Inverness where the Highland Railway maintained and built locomotives.

Built in 1864, the workshops consisted of several different buildings and included machine shops, an erecting shop, a paint shop and a roundhouse which had a turntable. Many steam engines were built here with local names such as "Clachnacuddin" and "Strathpeffer". Lochgorm continued to be the workshops of the Highland Railway until 1923, when the company was merged into the London Midland and Scottish Railway.
