Glenfinnan Viaduct

The West Highland Extension Railway, built by Sir Robert McAlpine, from Fort William to Mallaig was opened in 1901. One of the largest structures on the line is the Glenfinnan Viaduct. The viaduct, built between 1897 and 1901, measures over 1200 ft in length and has 21 arches, the tallest of which is 100 ft high. What is not immediately obvious in this photograph is that the viaduct is also curved.

Filming on the viaduct for Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets and Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban took place in 2001 and 2003. The viaduct was also used in the filming of Charlotte Gray starring Cate Blanchett
