At the beginning of the 20th century, the ferry between Kyle and Kyleakin on Skye was only a small rowing boat. A slightly larger boat with 2 planks tied across it served for many years to transport cars across. It was not until MacBrayne's took over the lease in 1935 that a 2-car vessel was employed, and the ferry operated only during the hours of daylight. The ferry queue often tailed back through most of Kyle
