An early photo of Kyle of Lochalsh taken looking across the narrows to Beinn na Caillich on the left and the Cuillins of Skye on the right. The village of Kyle was expanding inland after the railway line came through in 1897, with the Drill Hall, seen here side on, and the Church of Scotland to its immediate left. A steamer is visible just out from the jetty. With the railway coming to Kyle, traffic from inland routes increased hugely, but the sea provided the main source of transport and travel along all of the west coast for some time to come
