Main Street, Kyle of Lochalsh

A local Ross and Cromarty registered vehicle is parked in Main Street of Kyle of Lochalsh, with the Commercial Bank seen behind it and the Kyle Hotel further up the road. Although the location of a ferry to Skye for centuries, the village of Kyle expanded rapidly when the railway was extended from Stromeferry in 1897. The Commercial Bank was built around this time to serve the local population, which by 1917 rose to about 350. The photographer, Duncan Macpherson, was an early incomer, opening his pharmacy in Kyle in 1912
