Sailors, Kyle of Lochalsh

It has been suggested that the men in the foreground are German Naval Prisoners of War in transit, on board ship at Kyle of Lochalsh. Those in the background are British servicemen, presumably on guard duty. During the 1914-18 war, many German prisoners were sent to work on the iron ore mines on the island of Raasay, off Skye, so this group could be en route there. Kyle was used by the Navy in both World Wars, due to its location, deep water access and rail link with Inverness
