Duncan Macpherson in 'The Cage'

Duncan Macpherson built his own retreat on a plateau above his house in Kyle of Lochalsh. He called it 'The Cage', a historical reference to 'Cluny's Cage' on the slopes of Ben Alder, where Cluny Macpherson sheltered the fugitive Bonnie Prince Charlie. In his last book, 'Where I Belong', Macpherson writes, 'From my hill-top, as I sit on a grassy plateau beneath sheltering chestnut and pine tree, I can look unto the hills and feast my eyes on the Cuillins gleaming in the sunshine, I shall behold the beauty and glory of Skye'
