Urquhart Castle

Urquhart Castle sits on a headland to the south of Glen Urquhart Bay, near Drumnadrochit, with extensive views up and down Loch Ness. Little remains of the Iron Age fortress on the site. By the 12th century it had been replaced by a Norman motte and bailey. The castle changed hands repeatedly down the centuries due to its important location on the Great Glen. By the 17th century Covenanters and Jacobites were both in dispute over the castle, until it was partially blown up in 1691 by government troops and its condition deteriorated rapidly
