Ferrying Cattle to Kyle

A Highland Railway barge, H.R. No 2, is used here to transport cattle from Skye to the mainland at Kyle of Lochalsh. Drovers had taken cattle from the outlying islands to markets (trysts) such as Falkirk and Crieff on the mainland for centuries. In earlier times the cattle were forced to swim the narrows at Kylerhea at slack tide. However when the railway finally reached Kyle in 1897, the ferry improved and provided a safer alternative, as well as a link with other forms of transport. The steamer anchored at the railway pier in the background may be the 'Plover'
