Blacksmith, Kyle of Lochalsh

The blacksmith, named MacDonald, worked in the large Engine Shed which stood alongside the railway turntable, just outside the station in Kyle of Lochalsh. The smithy was required to shoe the two Clydesdale horses which were used in the early days to rotate the engines, but his duties no doubt extended to a variety of engineering work on the local railway. Duncan Macpherson printed this particular photograph as a postcard entitled The Village Blacksmith, Kyle of Lochalsh, which he then sold from his Chemist's shop in Kyle
