Eilean Donan Castle

Originally the site of an Iron Age island fort and then the 7th century cell of St. Donan, Eilean Donan Castle was founded in the 13th century and held by the MacKenzie family until the late 17th century. The castle was badly damaged in 1719, when garrisoned by about 50 Spaniard Jacobite sympathisers and bombarded by the British Navy. The castle was rebuilt by the MacRae-Gilstraps, and habitable by 1932. It is currently a major tourist attraction in the area.
