Kyle of Lochalsh in the snow

Main Street in Kyle of Lochalsh looks different with a coverering of snow. The Commercial Bank, built in 1896, is on the right. Kyle was for centuries the location of a ferry to Skye, and expanded rapidly when the railway was extended from Stromeferry in 1897. The Commercial Bank was built around this time to serve the local population, which by 1917 rose to about 350. The corrugated iron building on the left of the photograph was the Pioneer Stores, a general merchant's. The photographer, Duncan Macpherson, was an early incomer, opening his pharmacy in Kyle in 1912
