Plockton Primary School is centrally located in the village with a row of houses along the shore. The school's architect was Alexander Ross. The building was constructed in 1858, for Sir Alexander Matheson, and has the Matheson coat of arms over the main door. Margaret, Mary and Neil Macpherson, wife and children of the photographer Duncan Macpherson, all attended the school, and later Mary taught there. This particular photograph was included in Duncan Macpherson's souvenir booklet "Isles and Peaks of the West", published in 1923
