Picnic at Elgol

Fine views of the Cuillin are to be had from Elgol across Loch Scavaig, which is no doubt what attracted Duncan Macpherson on yet another day trip from Kyle of Lochalsh. Unusually, he is pictured here in front of the camera, with two young men who are probably his nephews. Elgol has been a popular destination for tourists since Victorian times, all aiming to take the boat trip down Loch Scavaig to Loch Coruisk, 'The Cauldron of Water', surrounded by the often forbidding peaks of the Cuillin. Sir Walter Scott and the artist J.M.W. Turner are two of the more well known visitors to have made the trip
