Duncan Macpherson, his son Neil and wife Margaret, sit on sandbags outside their home, Glenquithel, in Kyle of Lochalsh. The cellar of their home, the door of which is seen in the background, was an air raid shelter during World War II, although it was little used despite Kyle of Lochalsh being a naval base for the duration of the war. Neil was about 17 years old in this photograph. He died aged 24, on 21st May 1944, as a result of injuries sustained while serving in the 16th Army Ordnance Depot in Kent. The little dog sitting with Margaret Macpherson is Sally, a cairn terrier, the family pet
