Interior of Dun Beag, Struan

The word 'dun' originally came from the Gaelic for hillock but it was transferred to mean the fort that stood on the hillock and was later extended to mean any fort.

Struan lies approximately nine miles south east of Dunvegan on Skye. Dun Beag sits on the summit of a rocky outcrop nearby. Dun Beag is actually not a dun but a broch, a circular fort with a solid dry stone wall from the Iron Age. Parts of the wall of Dun Beag is almost 13ft high and 9ft thick. The remains of a staircase can also be found within the walls.
