The Harbour, Portree, Isle of Skye

The Telford designed quay was built in the 1820s, later extended and then extensively refurbished in 1902, when a new timber pier was added, as well as stone and slated buildings to act as offices and stores. These developments improved the facilities for the increasing amount of traffic using the harbour; regular steamers bringing tourists, mail boats, and freight carriers as well as fishing boats.

The Royal Hotel, Pier Hotel and what would become the Temperance Hotel, are all pictured here, as well as the houses of Beaumont Crescent available for rent, testifying to the influx of visitors to the island
