Portree from the Bay

This early card, postmarked August 1904, was posted in Broad Oak to a Mrs Stuart in Bexhill, in the south of England. The card has an undivided back with the instructions "The address only to be written on this side", with any message supposed to be written under the image on the front. However the correspondent has ignored this and address and message are written on the reverse.

The photograph shows Bosville Terrace and Mill Road in Portree, elevated above the bay, with Beaumont Crescent close to the shore on the left. The Telford-designed harbour, out of shot on the left, was once busy with fishing boats and sailing vessels, a few of which are pictured, and steamers called daily with passengers, mail and freight.
