Crofters' Houses near Portree

The rustic scene near Portree on Skye on this Valentine's postcard would no doubt appeal to visitors to the island, however the living conditions would have been rather primitive, although surprisingly warm in Winter and cool in Summer. The house in the foreground is roofed with thatch, while the one behind has the advantage of a corrugated iron roof, a neat peat stack close by. The houses are situated just to the northwest of Portree, probably at Sluggans, with Ben Tianavaig in the distance.
