A typical Skye Cottage

This photograph of an elderly woman, galvanised bucket in hand, outside her thatched home on Skye gives little indication of the primitive living conditions experienced inside the tiny house. The thickness of the walls which can be clearly seen at the door, would have made the house warm in Winter, but left little living space inside the house, and while the centrally located rudimentary chimney would have guided some of the smoke from the fire to the outside, the confined interior must have been dark and smoky a great deal of the time.
