Duncan and Mary Macpherson

Mary Macpherson is probably only about two or three years old in this photograph, held firmly on the seat by her father Duncan Macpherson. The picture has been taken in the garden of the family home, Glenquithel, in Kyle of Lochalsh, presumably by Mary's mother Margaret. Duncan Macpherson was born at Glenquithel, Aberdeenshire, on May 24th 1882, one of five children. After graduating as a pharmacist, gaining experience in various parts of England and working for several seasons at the spa in Strathpeffer, he settled in Kyle of Lochalsh in 1911. He set up a pharmacy close to the ferry jetty in Kyle, and built the house pictured on an open hillside above the village, calling it Glenquithel after the place of his birth. The house and garden feature in many of his photographs particularly with members of his family, his wife Margaret, daughter Mary and son Neil. Macpherson brought up his family and spent the rest of his life in Glenquithel until his death in 1966, and indeed Mary (1917 - 2007) spent her later years there also.
