Mary, Margaret and Duncan Macpherson

This photograph of the Macpherson family relaxing in their garden at Kyle of Lochalsh was probably taken by their son Neil. His father Duncan Macpherson was normally behind the camera and appears rarely in photographs, but seems at ease with his daughter Mary in the hammock, and his wife Margaret looking over his shoulder. They married in 1916, and Mary was born the following year, then Neil in 1919.

Duncan Macpherson was born at Glenquithel, Aberdeenshire, on May 24th 1882, one of five children. After graduating as a Pharmacist, gaining experience in various parts of England and working for several seasons at the spa in Strathpeffer, he settled in Kyle of Lochalsh in 1911. He set up a pharmacy close to the ferry jetty in Kyle, and built a house on an open hillside above the village, calling it Glenquithel after the place of his birth. The house and garden feature in many of his photographs particularly with members of his family, and indeed the hammock in which Mary reclines also appears in other images.
