Occupations - page 3

Allan the Shoemaker, Plockton, and Angie Campbell in Allan Maclennan's Shop.
In the past, everyone's shoes were made by hand out of leather. The leather soles had to be nailed on. You can see the man on the left is holding a shoe, a hammer and a thing called a 'last'. The 'last' was made out of iron and the shoemaker rested the shoe on it while he hammered in the nails.

Shoes and boots were very expensive so children often did not have any and went everywhere, inside and outside, in bare feet.

Clan Donald Library's Pocket Museum is a collection of notes, maps, photographs, illustrations and extracts from the archives which give an insight in to life on a highland estate. Clan Donald Library is located in a purpose built museum, the Museum of the Isles, in the grounds of Armadale Castle. The castle is situated in the heart of an estate, once part of the traditional lands of Clan Donald, on the Sleat Peninsula, in the south of the Isle of Skye
