Stair Tower, Shore Street, Thurso

A photograph of the old turnpike on Shore Street, Thurso dated 1687 with indistinct initials "DWKR.". Shore Street is the home of many 17th and 18th century houses, although many of their original features have been hidden due to reconstruction.

This two storey round external stair tower is a unique survival in Thurso and still remains there today. It is often referred to as the turnpike as this was allegedly the starting point for the stage coaches.
