Eastgate and High Street viewed from Stephen's Brae

Until the mid-19th century farmers drove their livestock through the streets of Inverness to the cattle markets at the top of Stephen's Brae. Many of the town's other markets were located on High Street. Today, Eastgate and High Street are pedestrianised precincts which still play a significant role in the commercial life of Inverness. On the right of the photograph is the Eastgate Shopping Centre completed in 1983. It replaced the former tenement buildings which were destroyed to make room for it.
