Stornoway, the main town of the island of Lewis, has one of the finest natural harbours in the Western Isles. The name derives from the Norse for 'steering bay'. During the 1800s herring boom there were over 1000 fishing boats working out of Stornoway Harbour. Stornoway still has a small fishing fleet and is the port for the ferry to and from the mainland. There is also an airport on the outskirts of the town which has daily flights to the mainland and other islands. Stornoway has a number of shops and sports facilities as well as being the home of Lews Castle College, part of the UHI Millenium Institute network, and a nursing campus of Stirling University. The Hebridean Celtic Festival is held each year in the grounds of Lews Castle and attracts over 10,000 visitors to the island. It is also home to An Lanntair arts centre which has a thriving and innovative art community.
