Stornoway

The name Stornoway comes from the Norse for 'steering bay' and sits in one of the best natural harbours in the Western Isles. Stornoway took advantage of the 1800s herring boom and grew into a busy port with a large fishing fleet and ferry links to Glasgow via Portree. In 1934, air services began to Renfrew and Inverness and Stornoway Airport was built by the RAF during the Second World War. In 1973 'roll on, roll off' ferries linked Stornoway to Ullapool.

Today the harbour houses a small fishing fleet, a marina for pleasure craft, a ship yard, three large piers for the passenger ferry and freight as well as an RNLI station and lifeboat and HM Coastguard.
