Barra airport

Barra airport is found at Traigh Mhòr at the north end of Barra in the Western Isles. It is the only airport in the world where scheduled flights use a beach for the runway. There are three runways marked by wooden posts in the sand. This means that flights are nearly always able to land into the wind which is a better situation than many other small airstrips. Emergency flights at night are also possible where the runways are illuminated by vehicle headlights and reflective strips laid on the sand. Barra airport is operated by Highlands and Islands Airports Limited and flights go to Glasgow and Benbecula. Scheduled flights began in August 1936 and flight times vary with the tides.
