Stone carving, Kildonnan Graveyard, Eigg

This carving is found in the graveyard at Kildonnan on Eigg. The monastery at Kildonnan was founded by the Irish missionary, St Donnan. He was martyred after himself and his monks were massacred by a local Pictish Queen in 617 or 618. A plaque nearby suggests that the carving is a Sheela na gig carving, regarded as a female fertility symbol or a symbol to ward off evil and death.
