Old St Peter's Church, Thurso

Old St Peter's Church in Thurso is thought to be one of the oldest churches in Caithness and was founded by Gilbert, Bishop of Caithness (1222-1245). Most of what remains of the church dates from the 16th and 17th centuries although the building was still in use as a parish church until 1832. Incidents from the church's past include a bloody battle against an Irish raider in 1649 and boys sitting in (and sometimes falling from) the rafters while listening to sermons.
