Thatched Croft House, Colbost, Skye

Colbost is a scattered community situated in north west Skye, looking east over Loch Dunvegan. The thatched cottage pictured is one of a small group of buildings set up by Peter MacAskill in 1969. The group comprises a croft house and two thatched huts, one of which houses a replica illicit whisky still. The croft house has a central hearth with most of the smoke from the peat fire escaping through the chimney in the thatched roof above. These two-roomed cottages, often known as blackhouses, were notoriously dark and smoky but provided a relatively snug protection from the elements.
