Montague Ninian Alexander Brodie (1912 - 2003) became chief of Clan Brodie on 15 February, 1943, the 25th Brodie of Brodie. Educated at Eton, he went on to join the acting profession and it was during his time with the Perth Repertory Company that he met his future wife, Helena Budgeon. Later in his life he gave up the theatre and helped his mother run the Brodie Estate. During the Second World War he served with the Royal Artillery and later held the offices of Justice of the Peace for Morayshire, and Deputy Lieutenant of Nairnshire. In 1978 he was forced, through financial circumstances, to hand Brodie Castle over to the National Trust for Scotland.

In this audio extract from the Moray Firth Radio programme 'Marshall Meets' Ninian talks to Sam Marshall about his childhood at Brodie Castle.

Interviewer: What do you remember of your, your boyhood as the sort of, the son of the castle, if you like? What was it like living then?

It was, it was very nice. Of course, from about the age of nine onwards I went to school in England, first of all to prep school and then public school in England, and that was travelling back and forth but nearly always back at Brodie for the holidays. I don't know - there was always something to do it seems, even though it was only messing about.

Interviewer: In those times was there many servants at Brodie Castle?

Yes, quite a number. The earliest I remember I think there were three in each department, so to speak - three housemaids, three in the pantry, three in the kitchen, plus a lady's maid and a chaffeur who lived out and it was quite a big staff
